I used to drive out to LA from Irvine by myself to this little restaurant to hear the deep funk Egon, Miles, Dusk (RIP), and Mixmaster Wolf used to bring. I was hooked.
Hearing J-Rocc and Melo-D on the decks is always a good time. Might be the first and last time I attend a Hiphop party at a Chinese restaurant.
This was the first ITF finals. Vin Roc was champ, Babu/Beat Junkies won categories. Seated viewing for a DJ battle was kind of awkward.
San Jose’s Hiphop scene circa ‘95-‘96 mostly congregated at a place called Cactus Club on 1st Street. Dereliks and Lackadaisical are responsible for some of the dopest underground EPs ever to come out the ‘Zae.
La-teer-ix. I first saw these guys do “Latyrx” at Foothill Jr. College in Los Altos for “Hip Hop on the Hill” in 1996 and was blown away. That Odetta “Hit or Miss” bassline kept echoing in my head. My friends and I saw them hanging out by the pay phones after the show, but we were too shy to give props.
